Position Summary:

The VP of Technology Strategy is responsible for defining the mid- to long-term technology strategy for 20+ technology services, ranging from standard healthcare infrastructure IT to next-gen healthcare innovations such as telehealth or precision medicine solutions. The scope of this role encompasses all 480+ practices in the US Oncology Network as well as many providers in the open market for the whole U.S. region through our Provider Solutions organization. The physicians and their care teams in these two multi-billion USD healthcare organizations see millions of cancer patients every year; helping to ensure that these cancer patients receive the best care possible is our mission as a technology team.

We are responsible for keeping the practices operational, safe, and prepared for the future. Digital transformation of cancer care in the community, for example through better patient engagement or precision medicine solutions, is an important focus area for this leader. Understanding relevant technologies in the healthcare market and potential technology providers / partners is key to the success of this role. Vetting new solutions and developing comprehensive roadmaps as well as providing portfolio oversight are critical responsibilities for this role. Partnering with practice and physician leadership to understand practice needs, healthcare industry trends, and translating these into a comprehensive network and practice technology strategy through an effective strategic planning process require a leader who is comfortable in the oncology space and who is able to collaborate with providers as an equal partner.

 McKesson-internally, The VP Technology Strategy and her/his team collaborate with the CIO, the VP Practice IT Delivery, executive leaders in our business lines, strategy, finance, and portfolio management to enable the desired business impact as well as customer and clinical success for the McKesson Specialty Provider Organization (MSPO). Furthermore, strong alignment with McKesson Technology’s executive leadership is essential to ensure we leverage the strength of McKesson for The US Oncology Network and the Provider Solutions organization. Therefore, this role owns collaboration and alignment with McKesson Technology’s Strategy function, leveraging their standards and at the same time ensuring that our business units’ needs are met.

This Leader delivers value by leading a critical business function that:

  • Is accountable for discovering and understanding existing and future network/open market and practice business needs and translating those into a comprehensive technology strategy
  • Takes ownership of the clinical technology portfolio management, leading the business’ portfolio management function
  • Defines and aligns clinical tech solution and portfolio strategy to support multiple business stakeholders, respond to customer needs at the point of care, and deliver on BU and enterprise strategic imperatives
  • Coordinates portfolio strategies and investments with executives across US Oncology, open market, and other specialty segments, as well as McKesson Technology’s strategy function
  • Establishes and drives processes to coordinate business prioritization and development or partnership approach (build, buy, partner)
  • Incubates and leads new clinical technology partnerships with McKesson Technology and external partners, including vendor negotiation, definition of terms and support models
  • Collaborates closely with other executive leaders in the organization in an innovation framework that aims to establish a fail fast culture
  • Coordinates with finance and stakeholder teams to align resources and priorities, including development of capital requests and business case development for new solutions
  • Provides execution oversight in collaboration with development, operations, sales and marketing teams for new solution initiatives
  • Provides thought leadership to internal and external customers as well as via healthcare industry channels
  • Provides oversight for solution lifecycle through ongoing customer engagement and feedback, pilot program design and execution, program launch, and sunset decision-making

Key Responsibilities  

1. Develop, align, and maintain clinical technology solution roadmap and portfolio to support Specialty Provider businesses through engagement with customer and internal leadership

2. Drive, monitor and manage ongoing prioritization and execution of network and open market technology strategy through matrixed leadership of Product Management and Product Development teams, and continued coordination with executive leadership

3. Develop strategic partnerships – balancing immediate business needs with implications across solution portfolio, MSPO, and enterprise objectives

4. Develop, iterate, validate, communicate solution priorities and timelines with customers and customer-facing organizations through direct engagement and coordination of customer forums, ad boards, etc.

Minimum Job Qualifications:

Education/Training –

  • Bachelor’s degree in health, business, or technology related discipline required; Master’s degree strongly preferred

Business Experience –

  • 15+ years of experience in healthcare, including experience in:
    • Oncology or specialty provider sales/operations
    • Key specialty health trends – e.g. value-based care, Precision Medicine, Patient engagement
  • 10+ years of leadership involving strategic planning, executive communication and team leadership
  • Multi-year Management Consulting / Strategy Consulting experience
  • 5+ years of experience in technology strategy roles, ideally in a clinical setting
  • Additional experience in software development and product management is a plus
  • Technology and service sales to physicians and senior leadership is a plus
  • Experience managing P&L / budget for team

Specialized Knowledge/Skills –

  • Proven ability to develop a strategic storyline and to convincingly communicate it to C-Level management  
  • Expertise structuring partner relationships and navigating business and legal processes related to partner activities
  • Strength in understanding and influencing senior executive leadership
  • Collaborative and creative approaches to managing conflicting priorities
  • Demonstrated leadership through direct and matrixed relationships
  • Understanding of technology solution lifecycle and development processes
  • Demonstrated strengths in communicating complex concepts and business models to variety of internal and customer stakeholders
